9. Shawn Michaels, Raw 1999
Two entries in and we arrive at the man who may just be the greatest guest referee of all time. Shawn Michaels will return as we move through this list, and in the run-up to SummerSlam 1999, he used his position as WWF Commissioner to organise a unique number one contender match for Steve Austin's world title, pitting his old stablemates Triple H and Chyna against The Undertaker.
This Raw main event was an encapsulation of Attitude Era nonsense; Chyna made her entrance before referee HBK, to Triple H's music, which was 'My Time' at this point. Michaels looked like a fan who had just won a contest, no striped shirt or long trousers to be seen, and the match itself was utter house show goodness.
A good percentage of the best guest ref performances come from the Attitude Era, largely because it was a time when we were spoiled with the roster depth and how stories were told and interwoven between members of the entire card. The history between all four of these competitors combined with Shawn's reaction when Austin stormed down the ramp to lay out Trips with a steel chair makes it a match worth watching.
