10 Greatest Wrestlers From Quebec
5. Edouard Carpentier (Montreal, By Way Of France)
Although born and raised in France and of eastern European descent, Carpentier's pro billing and his permanent residence make him a Montreal native in all the ways that matter.
Dubbed “The Flying Frenchman”, Carpentier was among the first high-flyers the business had seen back in the silver age of the 50's. This aerial style influenced the business in many ways which are obviously visible to this day.
As far as accomplishments, he was the last World Heavyweight Champion for the NWA of that era (won from Lou Thesz due to injury DQ) before territorial disputes over his status as titleholder caused a split in the promotion that birthed the AWA (of that era). This made him their first champion as well.
After retiring from the ring, Carpentier opened a wrestling school, and also went on to be the face of Francophone commentary in the WWF during the 80's.
