When The Rock debuted, he was the epitome of uncool. His hair was dripping wet in a jheri curl, he wore the most ridiculously tassled outfit this side of mid-nineties Jeff Jarrett and his happy-to-be-here smile was out of place in a world where Stone Cold Steve Austin was set to become the biggest star in the industry. Everything changed for The Rock when he joined The Nation of Domination and vented the frustrations of a year of fans hating him despite his best efforts. It was in The Nation that The Rock really came into his own. He was an obvious breakout star as a heel, and charisma oozed off him. During an interview segment at WrestleMania XIV, he casually said if you smell what Im cooking in an off-handed way, and it sounded right, so he kept saying it. It doesnt mean anything more than you know what Im saying but it became one of the most iconic phrases of the late-nineties. The Rock and his catchphrases become beloved by the fans, so much so that they often complete them for him before he gets around to it, and The Rock used this to great effect when he returned as a heel in 2003. He refused to do his catchphrases until everyone was quiet, and admonished the crowd for joining in with him, saying This isnt singalong with The Rock! When he returned to WWE in 2011 fans were over the moon to join back in with their favourite lines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr8glaM4ruM
