10 Greatest WWE Cruiserweight Wrestlers Ever
8. The Hurricane
One of wrestling’s great optimists, Gregory Helms was given what you could charitably call a half-baked gimmick, and made something hilarious and memorable out of it. After the purchase of WCW, Helms was rebranded “The Hurricane”, a self-styled superhero and a comedy character, which seemed a waste of a wrestler who’d proved his chops in Atlanta.
Helms made it work, though. The silliness of the gimmick stood out in an overstuffed roster, and his commitment to the bit got him over. He entered into a great feud with The Rock, and even scored a pinfall victory over the 'Great One'.
When he was allowed to shed the cape and wrestle as himself, he proved his chops with a lengthy run as Cruiserweight champion. While the division was a little underserved at the time, he put on solid matches with Psicosis, Nunzio, and Matt Hardy among others and worked well as a heel.
Helms seems like one of wrestling’s good guys, and has been at least somewhat successful everywhere he’s been. He was released as a producer this April by WWE in their pandemic-related round of cuts, but there’s no doubt he’ll land on his feet.
