Back in the Summer of 1999, Triple H was steadily moving up the WWE talent ladder after years of being considered a mid-carder. He had shed the association with DX as well as the short-lived Corporate Ministry and was ready to challenge for the WWF Championship at SummerSlam '99.

Despite seemingly heading for a clash with Federation Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin, the main event for SummerSlam was made a Triple Threat Match and Mankind was inserted into the mix. The rumoured backstory here was that Steve Austin did not see Triple H as a main event level talent and refused to drop the title to him directly, using Foley as the conduit.

So when Helmsley met Austin in an Anything Goes Match at No Mercy '99, all bets were off.

This would be Austin's final pay-per-view match for over a year as he required neck surgery that would take him 10-12 months to convalesce.

The match was a typical Attitude Era street fight that saw the use of multiple weapons, numerous run-ins, and arena floor brawling. The finish came when The Rock interfered, accidentally leveling Austin with a sledgehammer. This allowed Triple H to pedigree and pin the Rattlesnake, solidifying his spot as WWE's newest main eventer.
