Speaking of new main eventers, while it had taken Triple H nearly five years to reach the summit, Kurt Angle was able to make the jump in less than one following his WWE debut. No surprise then that Angle is often cited by his peers as being the fastest learner to the business, given his quick rise and successful ascent to WWE's main event.

Angle's first main event came at SummerSlam 2000 as part of a Triple Threat Match for the WWF Championship, also involving Triple H and champion The Rock. After WWE quietly ended the love triangle program between Helmsley, Angle, and Stephanie McMahon, Kurt was then given a championship opportunity against The Rock at No Mercy.

This match took place in the middle of Stone Cold Steve Austin's return to WWE after a year-long absence that saw him written off TV thanks to an anonymous hit-and-run. After the driver was revealed to be Rikishi, who "did it for da Rock", the former Too Cool member interfered in this match at No Mercy and inadvertently cost The Rock the WWF title.

This match would be Angle's first of four WWF Championship victories and, like Triple H at the same event just a year prior, it solidified him as WWE's newest headliner.
