10 Greatest WWE Referees Ever

2. Danny Davis

Danny Davis began his career with the World Wrestling Federation in 1982, splitting time as a referee and as a wrestler, donning a mask and jobbing as Mr. X to many greats, including former WWF Champions Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales. In 1986, he transitioned to full-time referee, favoring heels in the majority of matches he officiated, delivering fast counts and disqualifying faces for the most-minor of infractions. On commentary, Gorilla Monsoon would often ask how a mere referee could be as rich as Davis, insinuating that a number of bribes must have been accepted on Davis' part. After allowing the Hart Foundation to win the WWF Tag Team titles from the British Bulldogs in January 1987, WWF President Jack Tunney banned Davis from refereeing; almost immediately, manager Jimmy "Mouth of the South" Hart offered Davis a spot in his stable, and "Dangerous" Danny Davis was born. Davis- with the help of the Hart Foundation- got the pin in their six-man tag team match against the Bulldogs and Tito Santana at WrestleMania 3, and even advanced in the 1987 King of the Ring tournament, somehow defeating Santana and the Junkyard Dog before being eliminated by eventual winner Randy Savage. He eventually competed in both the 1988 Royal Rumble and the Battle Royal at WrestleMania 4, before hanging up the wrestling tights (in WWF) for good. He was reinstated under a "probationary" period as a referee in 1989, and worked as an unbiased official until 1995. He still referees and occasionally wrestlers in Massachusetts, but his true legacy will be as the crooked heel referee. He wasn't the first, and he wasn't the last, but he may very well have been the greatest heel referee in professional wrestling history on such a grand stage.
