9. Kevin Owens Betrays Sami Zayn At NXT TakeOver: R Evolution
It's a tale as old as time.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn team up together. They fall out. They remember that they're best friends. Rinse and repeat.
They'd gone from being Kevin Steen and El Generico: Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions, to being the most bitter of enemies. Eventually, they both found their way to WWE via NXT, where they were rechristened as Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.
Zayn was the first to go; he spent 18 months battling to become NXT Champion. It wasn't an easy road, but after becoming a fan favourite in Florida, Sami's chance came at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution in 2014. This was the peak of NXT. Fans were seeing the success of graduates on the main roster, while getting excited about who was coming up through the yellow and gold brand. Life in WWE was good.
With an electric crowd reflecting how much fans loved NXT, Sami did it! He beat Adrian Neville and raised the NXT Championship. The entire roster celebrated the win; he deserved it. Then Kevin Owens made his way out. The best friends celebrated together, until Owens did what he does best.
Kevin ruthlessly pushed Zayn to the ground, then hit him with a Powerbomb onto the apron. Owens was here and he meant business.
Fans were so sad to see Sami's big moment ruined. NXT was magic in 2014; they knew exactly what they were doing when they booked this. It was the ultimate heel move by KO; people genuinely disliked him for what he did.
