In a pretty cool idea, New Japan Pro Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling had a Best-of-7 series at Starrcade 95. It gave us some fresh undercard matches that we hadn’t seen before in the company like Chris Benoit vs. Jushin Liger and Sting vs. Sasaki, but it was Shinjiro Otani vs. Eddie Guerrero that was the highlight of the night.

On the fifth match in the series the two companies were tied at 2 - 2. Eddie came in as a young babyface to represent WCW and was hoping to give his team the lead. It was only his second pay-per-view match for them, but he put on one hell of a performance that set the tone for him for years to come.

Despite the language barrier, Otani and Guerrero looked liked they had wrestled countless times (which they had, for NJPW), hitting each other with stiff shots, believable submissions and impressive high-flying maneuvers. Unfortunately, Guerrero came up short, but he already looked like a star.

The only thing that held this match down a bit was that the crowd wasn’t super into it. But watching it now is a great way to see a young Eddie shine in front of a worldwide audience.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
