The very first match on Monday Nitro in September of 1995 featured Brian Pillman vs. Jushin Liger, but over three years earlier, on Feb. 29, 1992, the two had a far better encounter (that was 10 minutes longer), which got Superbrawl 2 off to a hot start.

WCW’s Light Heavyweight Championship was on the line with Jim Ross and Jesse Ventura on the call. Pillman and Liger went on to deliver a match that was so far ahead of its time in 1992 on an American pay-per-view, that it’s a bit incredible that the company felt comfortable putting it on.

They wrestled a bit slower of a pace than you would have seen on something like the Cruiserweight Classic, as they exchanged a healthy amount of submissions, but the foundation they built that night would be aped for years to come. It’s cool to see the crowd’s excitement grow as they went from relatively unsure of Liger, to exploding over the high-flying wonder of his his arsenal.

Ross’s enthusiasm brings this match to an even higher level, and Ventura also added to the spectacle...with his strange fascination with Liger’s mask, which he found a good way to work in multiple plugs for the movie Predator.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
