Independent wrestling is an odd beast. Frequently fun, at times bizarre, yet habitually unrewarding, the grind of an independent wrestling schedule can often mean long hours on the road, performing in a host of weird and wonderful locations for usually disappointing pay cheques.

But not every wrestler on the indies has been condemned to such mediocrity. In fact, countless stars have made a name for themselves and managed to forge a successful career out of it. No-one embodies this independent wrestling spirit quite like Colt Cabana.

Criminally misused in WWE, Cabana has spent the majority of his career on the independent circuit, with stints in every noteworthy independent company across the globe, from Ring of Honor and Chikara to Progress and Evolve. With such a well-travelled wrestling history, it's only fitting that he also have two runs as NWA Champion on his wrestling resumé.

The first came when Cabana defeated Adam Pearce to win the title as part of the revived NWA Championship Wrestling from Hollywood. After Cabana lost the title to The Sheik, Pearce would regain the strap only to once again lose it to Cabana. The two men would then engage in a seven bout series, titled "Seven Levels Of Hate". Pearce would regain the strap in match four, only for the series to end in controversy with neither man holding the belt at the conclusion.
