10 Hilarious Times Wrestling Didn't Take Itself Too Seriously
9. Law & Otis
WWE’s extended comedy segments often run out of steam long before they finish, but for some reason they’re quite good at courtroom scenes. The Trial of Eric Bischoff was a PG era highlight, and the recent Law & Otis segment was far better than expected thanks to committed performances and a well observed spoof of TV procedurals.
Aside from being funny, it actually lent some weight to a floundering plot, The Miz taking legal action against Money In The Bank briefcase holder Otis for some forgettable gripe. Otis’ resting disgruntled face will always draw a laugh, and The Miz and legal council John Morrison are enjoyably histrionic prosecutors.
Then there are the supporting turns from the likes of Asuka, delivering an impassioned testimony that was unfortunately entirely in Japanese, as well as JBL as the judge (corrupt, naturally) and the always welcome Ron Simmons as a bailiff.
The attention to detail here made the segment pop far more than recent comedy efforts. The production values were hardly high but the Law & Order-aping graphics and sound effects rounded this off into a well constructed and charming piece.
