10 Hilarious Times Wrestling Didn't Take Itself Too Seriously
8. Team Hell No Get Therapised
WWE’s treatment of Daniel Bryan prior to the Yes movement felt so odd to fans. Here was an incredibly talented, increasingly popular performer, and yet he’d never get the push he deserved. Teaming up with Kane felt like yet more treading water - it turned out to be anything but.
Team Hell No was a huge boon for both men. Their in ring work was solid, but their skits and vignettes were among the highlights of WWE TV every week for a while.
Placing the wrestlers in anger management class and playing it completely straight was a stroke of genius. Kane especially got to show a side he’d seldom exhibit, and the writers did something almost never seen in wrestling: they referred back to previous angles.
Kane recounting his entire life story, including shocking Shane McMahon’s testicles, Katie Vick, marrying Lita, and his one-sided feud with Pete Rose, was outstanding scripting, performed superbly by a freshly purposeful Glenn Jacobs.
The sharp writing and outstanding chemistry and commitment of the two performers (along with well meaning therapist Dr Shelby) made for wrestling comedy gold - you could watch and enjoy this without knowing anything about the characters, but the backstories made it all the more enjoyable.
