10 Hilarious Times Wrestling Didn't Take Itself Too Seriously
2. Steve And Booker Ruin A Grocery Store
The early ‘00s Invasion angle was a dropped ball for WWE, but it was worth Vince buying up the competition for the supermarket brawl alone. In 2002, Stone Cold and Booker T were at odds. With the Rattlesnake on the hunt, Booker sequestered himself in a Bakersfield convenience store - but he couldn’t hide for long, and suffered a 10 minute beatdown that caused equal damage to the former WCW champion and the shop.
It’s a segment that couldn't possibly go down today, the freedom allotted to the two superstars unthinkable. This was a real, functioning grocery store that the performers were cut loose in. Booker staggers from aisle to aisle, Austin in hot pursuit. The Texan wallops his foe with pizzas, sausages, and condiments, while providing a side splitting running commentary.
The result is a delightful, hilarious segment that anyone, wrestling fan or otherwise, would enjoy. The other result was around $15,000’s worth of damage to the shop, with every part of the mayhem integral in telling the ridiculous story. Money well spent on the part of WWE.
