10 Huge WWE Comebacks That Led To More Huge Comebacks
8. Beth Phoenix (2018), Then Edge (2020)
After growing increasingly frustrated with the way women wrestlers were being portrayed and positioned on the card, ‘The Glamazon’ Beth Phoenix handed in her notice to WWE in 2012; one year after her future husband Edge had to leave the business behind due to debilitating neck injuries catching up with him.
In the years spent away from the ring, Phoenix and Edge took a much-needed break from wrestling and started a family in the mountains of North Carolina. That time was pivotal in the way women were featured and showcased on WWE TV, with the ‘Women’s Evolution’ gaining momentum after performers like Paige, Charlotte and Sasha Banks stived for equality. This led to Phoenix returning to the company as a commentator and occasional performer for big-time events, like the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match in 2018 and WrestleMania 35.
Her return and being so close to it got Edge to think about a comeback for the first time, with his neck having had a chance to recuperate in the years he spent retired. Phoenix helped Edge train to get back into ring shape, with Edge claiming after his gripping return at Royal Rumble (2020): “none of this is possible without Beth having my back and being my support through all of this.”
