10 Important Innovations WCW Made To The Wrestling Industry

8. Airing More Pay-Per-Views In A Year

The PPV business is something WWE started among wrestling companies. They were very successful at it. PPV shows were seen as major events featuring several titles on the lines and a lot of great matches. The television shows were used to build up to the PPVs. It's a concept that still works to this day although things have changed as far as the TV shows go. In the late 1980s, WWE had four PPVs. In 1993 they added King of the Ring. By May 1995 they added PPVs every month with two hour In Your House shows joining the WrestleMania, King of the Ring, SummerSlam, Survivor Series and Royal Rumble events. The question is, would they have done monthly PPVs on their own or were they forced to do it because of WCW? The WCW PPV business started out five events in 1991, then six in 1992, six in 1993, seven in 1994, nine in 1995, ten in 1996 and from 1997 on they had twelve in a year. This one of those things where we don't know for sure if WWE was going to have monthly PPVs every year, but WCW doing them more often (they had more PPV events in 1993 and 1994, for example) definitely changed the PPV format at least a little bit.
