10 Important Innovations WCW Made To The Wrestling Industry

9. An Increase In Production Values

What WCW did during their ascension was incorporate the kind of slick production values on their shows that we hadn't seen before. WWE was still living in the past with their production. They really didn't put that much money into changing things up because they didn't have to. They were locked in as the number one wrestling company and they were never forced to change things up. Once WCW started to kick their ass, they had to change. It was smart of WCW to change how they presented their programming, particularly the way Nitro looked. It wasn't like a normal wrestling show. The commentary team was placed by the entrance with a professional looking set built around it instead of the traditional thing where announcers were seated ringside. They brought in the Nitro Girls as WCW's version of a sports team's cheerleaders. It was a welcome sight for male fans that were probably sick of seeing only men on the show. When the NWO formed they started filming these black & white commercials talking trash about whoever was in their path. It was so different from the typical wrestling promo where somebody was yelling into a camera backstage. Fans wanted something different and WCW gave it to them. That's a big reason why they were able to grow.
