10 Important Innovations WCW Made To The Wrestling Industry

7. Wargames

Wargames was an awesome match that Dusty Rhodes created in the mid 1980s for the NWA and became a WCW thing once the company started using that name in 1991. It's a match where two teams of either four or five people worked together in two rings to make the other team submit. That wasn't all, though. The two rings were covered by a massive steel cage that surrounded both rings. While WWE has never had a Wargames match and may never have one, they have borrowed the Wargames idea a bit. The Hell in a Cell match is contested inside of a steel cage with a roof on it. The cage actually surrounds the ring so that the competitors can compete outside the ring instead of just inside of it. Another concept that WWE borrowed from Wargames is the Elimination Chamber match. That's a Triple H idea that puts this massive black cage around the ring with two guys going at it in the match while four others are locked in pods until it's their time to enter. In a Wargames match, two guys start and then the others enter every two minutes. Elimination Chamber is essentially the same concept with slightly different rules. The Wargames match is very influential because without it, WWE might not have the Hell in a Cell and Elimination Chamber matches, both of which have become PPVs too.
