10 Important Steps In Goldberg's Evolution

7. Becoming WCW World Champion

As United States Champion, Goldberg started to really assert himself as a force in World Championship Wrestling. Fans had been conditioned to accept that nobody would be portrayed as a real saviour of the company against the nWo, but hopes were rising that Goldberg could be the man to believe in. The crude way Sting had been booked against Hogan at Starrcade left many despondent. Spring months gave way to the Summer of 1998, and Bill Goldberg was one of the hottest stars on the pro wrestling landscape. Attention started to naturally turn towards exactly when WCW higher-ups would book the beast against Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Title. The evening of July 6th would be the date, although the match shockingly took place on Nitro instead of Pay-Per-View. WCW cost themselves millions of dollars with this decision, but Eric Bischoff wanted to beat Monday Night Raw in the ongoing ratings war. Regardless of which show it was taking place on, Goldberg vs. Hogan was huge. The latter was slain by WCW's newest sensation, and it was a tremendous show of faith from the promotion to have Goldberg beat Hogan for the title.
