Undefeated since his debut on the September 22nd, 1997 edition of Monday Nitro, it was only a matter of time before Bill Goldberg captured gold in WCW. At Spring Stampede 1998, Raven captured the WCW United States Title from Diamond Dallas Page. The next night on Nitro, he was staring at the lights for Goldberg, who snatched his first title in the company. In 1998, the US Title still had merit in World Championship Wrestling. There hadn't been a reign shorter than a month since 1994, and names like DDP, Ric Flair and Curt Hennig had all won the belt in the intervening years. The title was very much secondary to the WCW World Title, but it was still considered a big deal. Therefore, when Goldberg won it on the April 20th, '98 episode of Nitro, people were in raptures. Many had considered it likely Raven's group - known as 'The Flock - would interfere and cost Bill his first televised loss. The Flock did become involved, but Goldberg fought them all off and pinned Raven to bag the belt.
