Hunter's biggest haters seethed when Eric Bischoff handed him the brand new World Heavyweight Title on the 2 September 2002 edition of Raw. The hate cooled when Trips dropped it to Shawn Michaels in the first Elimination Chamber bout at Survivor Series, but Triple H won it back in an explosive 'Three Stages Of Hell' epic at Armageddon.

What happened next was awful.

The one-time big match machine had some of the dirt worst clangers vs. Scott Steiner (Royal Rumble and No Way Out), Kevin Nash (Bad Blood) and more before losing to Goldberg at Unforgiven 2003. Christ, even the Booker T feud, which threatened to be a reprieve in-ring, was wrecked by an unsavoury helping of senseless racism.

Make no mistake: Hunter's agonising 280-day stint with Raw's new top prize was sh*t. Injuries and ego collided to both slow him in-ring and cause him to think that opening the Monday flagship with a 20-minute monologue was the way to go.

It wasn't.
