For one incredible hour in of all years 2018 - when the promotion was otherwise so lousy that it inadvertently allowed the conditions for AEW's formation to bloom - WWE presented one of the all-time great hours of pro wrestling.

WWE all but promoted the idealised version of what professional wrestling should be an hour or so after Drake Maverick pissed his pants.

Ronda Rousey Vs. Charlotte Flair was as vicious a match as you'll ever see in WWE irrespective of gender. The timing and intent behind everything was outstanding; were certain thrown strikes not evaded in time, both women were looking at concussions. They engineered a thrilling combat sports atmosphere in a remarkable match, given both are prone at times to entering sloppy performances.

Brock Lesnar Vs. Daniel Bryan was a minimalist masterpiece.

If wrestling is all about when to do things, it might be the perfect, understated match. If you read a recap of it, you'd think it was nothing special. Reduced to the sum of its parts, it was a prolonged beat-down, a comeback, and a finish - but it was paced with such master craftsmanship that everybody in Los Angeles bit on the idea that the far smaller heel had the number of one of the meanest and hardest man who has ever lived.

Bryan's comeback surged with an electricity that was astonishing, and the trap he set informed the drama of the brutal closing stretch. Bryan navigated the difficult situation, of playing undersized heel underdog - a bizarre oxymoron - to perfection. Unmoved by the WrestleMania 37 main event (in which he was still outstanding, of course), this was its antithesis: a stern challenge of his wrestling genius that he treated with relish.

He somehow looked both dead and unkillable across 19 seamless minutes.
