10 Infamous WWE Conspiracy Theories

1. Bret Was In On The Montreal Screwjob

This is it, the big one. The conspiracy to end all conspiracies, but with bit of a twist. It is not known exactly what happened leading up to this infamous match, but the general consensus is that Bret Hart was planned to win the match and retain the WWE title, but lose it the next night on Raw and then leave for WCW. Vince McMahon was not happy with that plan, so he made the referee end the match early, and award Michaels the championship without Bret's knowledge.

That is the extremely abridged version of the story, and some people even think that what we saw that night was all an elaborate ruse. It has been claimed that Bret Hart was in on it the whole time, and the plan was carried out to elevate everybody involved. It does make some sense, since Bret became the most talked about wrestler at the time, and Vince McMahon immediately became the biggest heel in the business. Shawn Michaels gets to be champ again, and the attitude era is born.

So was Bret in on it? That is doubtful at best. Bret's shock and disgust was so genuine that if it was faked he deserves an Oscar. Plus the corroborating stories of Bret legitimately beating up Vince backstage point towards that Bret didn't know. Like most conspiracies, there may be a grain of truth lying somewhere deep down, but very few people know the exact circumstances of that night.

What other conspiracies seem to crop up a lot? Many rumors go around about what happens backstage, but which ones really make you think that there is more to those stories than what you see on the surface?
