Previously, Marty Jannetty and Scott Hall had actually been friends. Getting along pretty well on the road, the pair's friendship was abruptly ended when it became clear to Hall that Jannetty was using his name to check into hotels. Along with another wrestler he was traveling with, Jannetty used Hall's name instead of his own and trashed one hotel room. Upon finding out about what had happened, Scott was understandably furious. On his way to the venue for the show that evening, Hall dressed in clothes he didn't mind getting blood on, because he was game for a fight. Backstage, Jannetty was sleeping, and he was rudely awoken by a beating from his former friend. The incident happened before both men were in the WWF, and Jannetty was a bigger name than Hall at the time. Due to this, Hall thought for sure he was going to get fired. Remarkably, he even got hot when Harley Race encouraged him to calm down. Instead of reacting, Race simply reset a knuckle Hall had out of place from punching Marty, and told him to beat someone up after the show, not before it.
