Only in the Royal Rumble could a competitor who lost the match actually still get his hand raised after the final bell, but this actually happened in 1997, when 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin was declared the victor despite being eliminated by the actual winner - Bret Hart - earlier in the match.

Austin, who was still in his transitional tweener role, had been dominant throughout the early stages of the match, even finding himself alone on numerous occasions as he awaited the next competitor to enter the fray. Eventually, after sitting pretty for several minutes, 'Stone Cold' came face-to-face with 'The Hitman' and the crowd came alive.

After battling for what seemed like an eternity, Hart would get the better of Austin by throwing him over the top rope, ending any chance he had of going to WrestleMania 13. Fortunately for Austin, all referees were distracted at that moment by a brawl between Terry Funk and Mankind which allowed the former 'Ringmaster' to sneak back into the ring and steal the win from his greatest rival.
