10 Insights Into Brock Lesnar's New WWE Deal

5. UFC Was A Genuine Contender

Make no mistake about it, the UFC was a genuine contender for Brock's signature. UFC President Dana White was keen to add more box office power to his company, following on from a dismal 2014 on pay per view. Lesnar was equally keen on an MMA return, having left UFC with a feeling of unfinished business. You could tell in his SportsCenter interview that he really did feel quite emotional on closing that chapter of his life. He talked about having trained for two months to get back in shape for MMA, and it is pretty obvious from looking at him that he had indeed been hitting the gym. Lesnar is in great shape, but ultimately decided he wasn't mentally prepared for a UFC return. He also said that his wife (Sable) didn't want him to go back there, and that also played a big part in him ultimately choosing WWE for his future. In truth, he would have only worked as a special attraction in the UFC. White would have had to have fed Lesnar opponents, as there's no way that Brock could have conceivably gone up against MMA's best heavyweights. The evolution of the sport was already passing Lesnar by when he was still active in the company in 2010. But the UFC deal could have worked in the right circumstances. It seems very likely that Brock and Dana White at least talked informally about a deal to come back. Lesnar wouldn't have been training for nothing. Neither side can admit that an offer was in place, but behind closed doors they could have negotiated in secret.
