10 Killer PPV Openers Nobody Talks About

3. Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle - WWE Summerslam 2002

Summerslam 2002 is best known for the return of Shawn Michaels, coming back from a serious back injury four years prior to face Triple H in what was billed as an 'Unsanctioned Match'. It was a wonderful story, and that along with Brock Lesnar's capture of the WWE Undisputed Title from The Rock made Summerslam '02 wholly memorable. Setting the pace, Rey Mysterio and Kurt Angle put on a true cracker of an opening match. Mysterio was the new sensation in WWE, making his debut in July, and he quickly proved he belonged in there with the top names. Angle was consistently on fire, so it came as no surprise when both men produced wonders. Quick, smooth action was the name of the game here, and it's fair to say that this match helped propel Mysterio to a different level in the eyes of Vince McMahon. Rejuvenated by his return to the big time, the masked man was a revelation, and Kurt Angle was the perfect opponent. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x20vs9h_summerslam-2002-kurt-angle-vs-rey-mysterio_sport This match isn't an especially long one, but it doesn't need to be. So much happens in the ten minutes or so Mysterio and Angle are given, and the crowd are all over it. It's difficult to watch this one without wishing there were more characters like Rey and Kurt around in WWE today.
