The Anonymous Raw General Manager storyline started in June 2010. Bret Hart had just been fired as GM, but instead of recruiting another frontline official, Vince McMahon revealed that the new GM’s identity would remain a mystery. Wrestlers could communicate with the GM through Michael Cole, who acted as his/her mouthpiece, and the sound of Cole’s e-mail notifications soon became a regular occurrence on Raw.

The Anonymous GM pulled Raw’s strings from afar for over a year. There was a strong level of intrigue around his/her identity at the start, but this slowly dissipated as the months progressed, and by the end, fans were downright sick of the angle. The GM started dropping hints towards their identity by using the catchphrases of many popular superstars, but the gimmick was eventually phased out in favour of John Laurinaitis and Triple H in 2011.

The angle fizzled-out, and for a while, it looked like the reveal would never come. The Anonymous GM returned to control the show for a single night in 2012, however, and WWE finally solved the mystery. In spite of the poor reaction to his unveiling as Vince McMahon’s illegitimate son, Hornswoggle was announced as the man behind the whole scheme. It was an immensely dissatisfying conclusion, and one that had come at least a year too late.
