10 Lamest WWE Title Changes
3. Randy Orton To Triple H To Randy Orton (No Mercy 2007)
For a year following Unforgiven 2006, John Cena had his uninterrupted third WWE title reign. In that year, he defeated a killers row including Great Khali, Umaga, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton, and Edge. It was when "SuperCena" really became a thing, and he became, for lack of a better word, the Ace of WWE.
My point being: it was a good time for the WWE Championship, as it was strongly booked and protected, staying with one guy for a long period of time. Cena only lost it because he had to take time off for surgery, but by the time he did, the belt had regained a lot of cache.
Which makes what they did afterwards all the more ludicrous.
So at No Mercy 2007, Randy Orton, Cena's scheduled opponent, was simply awarded the title. Immediately, Triple H came out to protest this, and in the first match of the show, he defeated Orton to become champion. I guess Triple H saw how his buddy Scott Hall did this to Shane Douglas at In Your House 4 and thought "I wanna do that."
In the middle of the show, Hunter had a successful title defense against Umaga, and in the main event, he faced Orton yet again, this time in the previously scheduled Last Man Standing match. Orton won, and he would remain champion for several months.
Three WWE title changes in one night after a year of zero. Way to go.
