10 Last-Minute WWE Battleground 2017 Rumours You Need To Know
4. AJ Styles Retains The United States Title
AJ Styles had been chasing the United States Championship since coming to SmackDown in the Superstar Shake-Up, but on July 7, the unthinkable happened - Styles actually defeated U.S. Champion Kevin Owens for the belt at a Madison Square Garden house show, marking a very rare non-televised title change.
Rematch clauses being what they are, Owens will be challenging Styles for the belt at Battleground. If Owens wins the belt back, it stands to reason that there will be yet another match between the men when Styles cashes in his own rematch clause.
That could happen, and they could blow off the program on Smackdown in two days, but it seems more likely that Styles will just retain the championship and move onto another program for SummerSlam. Owens never really "needed" the belt - it was more or less just a way to give his program with Chris Jericho some extra importance - so giving Styles a long run with the title would be for the best.
