Jinder Mahal may have been an unlikely winner of the Smackdown number one contendership match a couple of weeks ago, but since then, it's become clear that the company is taking his push seriously. Already, Mahal has attacked WWE Champion Randy Orton and taken possession of the title belt.

Orton has a lot to deal with, given that Payback will see the final blowoff to his long feud with Bray Wyatt. That bout was originally announced as a championship match, but it was later changed to a non-title contest with little fanfare. That seems to suggest that Bray Wyatt - who's just moved to Raw and could use some momentum - will be picking up the win.

Wyatt rarely wins cleanly, but he doesn't have his family with him - Erick Rowan is still on Smackdown, while Braun Strowman and Luke Harper have gladly disassociated themselves from "The Eater of Worlds." Therefore, it seems most likely that Mahal will play a role in the match. While obviously not aligning with Wyatt, he can strike at Orton in a way that gives Wyatt the win and reminds fans that Mahal is Orton's new number-one nemesis.
