There was something fitting about Jake Roberts putting Stone Cold Steve Austin over in The King of the Ring back in ‘96. After all, he was the man who made it ok for the audience to cheer bad guys, and that was what got Austin so many fans and titles himself.

Too bad for Jake that when he owned the trend back in the early nineties, it was way ahead of the curve and far ahead of the booking. At the time, the concept of a bad guy getting cheers would have blown the bookers tiny little minds.

The closest he came to the title was after a brush with Hogan. Robert’s attacked him and Robert’s got cheered for it. Cheered. For attacking Hulk Hogan. It was such an unprecedented fan reaction the segment was cut from the show.

The bookers, trying to protect their cash cow Hogan – and appease him because this incident left him pretty pissed off – decided to separate the two on television indefinitely. The feeling at the time was that Hogan was trying to halt the career of a man he saw as a usurper to his status as top star. Jake never did get his run.
