Dean Malenko has what’s known in the wrestling industry as a “great workrate”. This means that they are talented at making matches appear legitimate, making moves look authentic, and having an in ring style that brings the best out of him and his opponents.

It’s depressing to know that in wrestling there is a slang term for someone that is good at their jobs, but then again wrestling has never really been about the wrestling.

As a great worker and not a flashy superstar, championship gold was never really on the menu, although it could have been. Malenko tragically traded in his boots in 2001 just before WWE got its hands on another Championship label, the WCW World Heavyweight title. This was just before the advent of the Ruthless Aggression era, an era that served men like Dean Malenko better than any period in WWE before.

His former Radicalz stablemates Christ Benoit and Eddie Gurerro became champion in this period as the crowd were starting to become internet savvy and finding out more about wrestling than any generation before them. This is where the superstardom of technical wizards like Malenko came from, and with two world championships knocking around the WWF, it was probably only a matter of time before he got his shot.
