10 Little Known Things You Didn't Know About SummerSlam

6. Forget WrestleMania, SummerSlam Boasts WWE's Biggest Ever Attendance

The myth put forward by WWE is that WrestleMania 3 was their all time attendance record. According to the McMahons, the Pontiac Silverdome filled up to a capacity of 93,173. The truth is quite different. Dave Meltzer was handed evidence from Zane Breslof (who helped promote the show), that illustrated WrestleMania 3's actual crowd was in the 78,000 region. That means the WWE's biggest attendance ever wasn't a WrestleMania, but in fact a SummerSlam! SummerSlam 1992 played out in front of 80,353 people at London's Wembley football stadium. That stood for an age as WWE's real attendance record. Then came WrestleMania 29 in New Jersey, which according to WWE's official attendance figure, bettered the 92 SummerSlam by a few hundred people. However, it's believed that the Mania 29 attendance may have more likely been in the 75,000 region. WWE are thought to have exaggerated the fans as they always do at Mania. Another thing to note about the UK SummerSlam, it was originally meant to come from Washington D.C, but WWE moved it to the UK in hope of higher revenues. British fans were crazy for pro wrestling at the time, particularly with the national hero British Bulldog doing well. That wasn't good news for Shawn Michaels, who had originally been booked in the headliner position for the Washington card. Instead we got one of the greatest matches of all time, British Bulldog beating Bret Hart in front of a jubilant UK crowd.
