10 Live Observations From WWE Extreme Rules 2016
4. I Guess Thumbtacks Are PG
Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho blew off their feud in the first-ever Asylum match, a steel cage bout that could only end by pinfall or submission and saw weapons hung above the cage for the taking.
The match got off to a slow start - it was a methodical bout, and following the insanity that was the Intercontinental Title match, it had trouble capturing the fans. Though Ambrose and Jericho were building up to something special, fans still chanted "We want Rollins!" and "This match sucks!"
Eventually, though, the two experts of the craft got the crowd into their war. They climbed the cage and grabbed weapons, using items like a straitjacket and a barbed wire 2x4. Ambrose finally took down a bucket, then pulled out a familiar cloth bag. Opening the bag, he dumped thousands of thumbtacks out in the ring.
This was the first time in many years - and the first time during the PG era - that thumbtacks had come into play during a match. Doing this on broadcast TV could have very well bumped the rating up to TV14, but on the WWE Network, the company makes the rules.
The tacks were used very well, with both men teasing bumps in the pile for several minutes. Finally, Jericho went for the Codebreaker and got slammed on the tacks. Ambrose then followed up with Dirty Deeds on the thumbtacks, scoring the pin.
