10 Live Observations From WWE Las Cruces
3. No Mention Of Chavo Guerrero, Sr.
Just a few hours before the show began, news broke over the internet that Chavo Guerrero, Sr. (aka Chavo Classic), father to Chavo Guerrero, Jr. and brother to hall of famer Eddie Guerrero, had passed away after a battle with liver cancer. This is worth mentioning, because Las Cruces is practically a stone's throw away from the Guerrero family's hometown of El Paso, Texas.
That is why it seems just a bit odd that no mention of him was made on the show. Sure, Chavo was never the biggest star in the WWE, certainly not as big as Eddie, and the news of his death had literally just been released, but it's still something that would come off a bit weird to any native of the area. Not to mention the fact that he had an exceptional career outside of the WWE as well.
After all, this was a SmackDown house show, and Chavo Classic was always associated with the blue brand during his time with the company, even securing the old Cruiserweight Championship for a time. Plus, Las Cruces has proven to be an ample place to pay tribute to the Guerreros in the past (again, because it's so close to El Paso), with a show they had in the very same building last summer containing tributes to the late great Eddie from Kalisto, Sasha Banks, Sin Cara, Alberto Del Rio, and Dean Ambrose.
While the venue seemed like the perfect place for a quiet tribute, there was nothing of the sort, as WWE likely want to make sure there were no dubious circumstances regarding his death. Still, it was something that certainly did not go unnoticed. In fairness, WWE would later publish a rather touching article announcing the legend's passing on their website.
