10 Longest Gaps Between WWE Title Defences

The United States Championship has been treated rather appallingly under WWE's watch. The title was brought back in 2003 with a fantastic tournament, one that was won by Eddie Guerrero. The plan seemed wise enough - put the title on one of your best workers, have him defend it in a series of high quality matches. Simple.

Somewhere along the way, WWE got cold feet. Big Show defeated Latino Heat for the championship at No Mercy in October 2004, and held the title for just short of five months. How many championship defences did the World's Largest Athlete make during those five months?

Two. Two title defences, the first of which came some 107 days after he had won the title.

Beth Phoenix was arguably the most dominant female wrestler of her generation in WWE, and her career suffered somewhat for the poor presentation of women's wrestling in the company at the time. Phoenix must be looking at today's crop of women with no small amount of envy.

Phoenix's first WWE Women's Championship reign started off well enough. The Glamazon defeated Candice Michelle for the title at No Mercy 2007, before defending it against Michelle, Mickie James, and Melina. After defeating James and Melina in a triple threat match on RAW, the title went into practical hibernation for 107 days. Phoenix didn't defend the title again after that December triple threat until the middle of April the next year. She was unsuccessful too, losing the title to Mickie James on an episode of RAW taped in London.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
