10 Longest Matches In WWE History
7 (Tie). Bob Backlund Vs. Don Muraco (24 August 1981): 60 Minutes
Famed for his extraordinary endurance and conditioning, Bob Backlund was a celebrated amateur wrestler prior to entering the professional realm, which helps explain his ability to go all out in hour-long title matches.
This clash took place more than three years' into a WWF Heavyweight Championship reign that would eventually stretch for a ridiculous 2,135 days. Backlund was his era's franchise player, but while the well-documented backlash towards his "howdy doody" character hadn't yet kicked in, he still looked a tad vanilla across from Muraco - another top star. Together, they worked a slow, deliberate formula typical of the era, and like countless other old-school main events, it went to a 60-minute time limit draw.
Backlund retained his title without actually pinning Muraco, though their rivalry would continue over the coming months, with Bob typically getting the better of his swaggering opponent. His reign would survive deep into 1983, when he finally dropped it to The Iron Sheik. His popularity now in the pits, Backlund eventually departed the company the following year, before resurfacing in 1992.
