Both Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales were decorated WWWF Champions by the time this match came around.

The former had already amassed an almighty 2,803-day reign earlier in his career, and Morales picked up where he left off in 1971, holding the gold for 1,027 days after Ivan Koloff's transitional run. This particular title fight took place deep into Pedro's reign, but surprise, surprise, there was no winner. They hit the building's curfew, and time was called after just over 65 minutes.

This was a historic bout on number of levels. Not only were Morales and Sammartino two of the period's most popular stars, but the event took place at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York, and came close to becoming the highest drawing outdoor wrestling show at the time. An audience of 22,508 braved bad weather to fill the bleachers. They didn't break the record, but they turned out in droves to support two of the North East's greatest wrestlers, whose colossal runtime ensured that no matter what the fans spent on their tickets, they got their money's worth.
