10 Longest Reigning WCW World Heavyweight Champions
4. Goldberg - 174 Days
Interestingly, Goldberg would only have a single reign as WCW World Heavyweight Champion. It came as the Goldberg train was reaching its greatest speed, his undefeated streak showing no signs of abating. He had captured the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship from Raven, and not even the backstage politics of Hogan and the nWo could stop the Goldberg juggernaut. In another sign that WCW was focusing on ratings as opposed to making money, the Goldberg vs. Hogan world title match was given away for free on an episode of Monday Nitro. The crowd reaction to Goldberg was one of the best in company history. The entire Georgia Dome was with the up-and-coming superstar. Goldberg would hold the title for 174 days in total, before controversially dropping it to Kevin Nash (Da Man was blasted with a taser by Scott Hall). This also marked his first loss in professional wrestling. In what would turn out to be quite beautiful symmetry, Goldberg held the title for the same number of days as the number of matches he was supposed to have had; 174 days. 173 wins, one defeat.
Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
