Bruno Sammartino is a traditionalist when it comes to wrestling; he firmly believes that the contests we view within the squared circle should be seen as a sport and nothing else. The former WWE Champion has frequently slated Vince McMahon for turning wrestling into a soap opera with far-fetched, elaborate and often crude storylines, subsequently cheapening the sport that he devoted such a large portion of his life to. Sammartino was also angered by the heavy steroid abuse that started to become a trend in professional wrestling. The Italian Strongman believed that McMahon valued appearance far more than his employees health. He listed these issues to be detrimental in the reason he was unwilling to accept his place within the WWE Hall of Fame until 2013. Sammartino finally agreed to the honour after seeing the more family-friendly product that the company were displaying. Here is what the wrestler had to say about his previous issues with McMahon:
When I retired a new regime took over, Vince McMahon Jr., and in the beginning I went back to help out. I colour commentated with him, but then I started to see things that were disturbing to me. I saw the steroid use in wrestling that became kind of rampant and I saw the changes in wrestling itself with some nudity and some vulgarity going on with different things that they were doing; and the profanity was so much. That bothered the heck out of me.
