10 Masked Wrestling Gimmicks That Changed Ownership
5. Black Scorpion
After a fruitless 10-month reign in the WWF, that saw him mostly trade undercard victories on Prime Time Wrestling, Al Perez jumped to WCW in late 1990 to assume what would be his first, and last, main event role in a major company - The Black Scorpion.
Debuting in August 1990, the hooded Black Scorpion (gaudily voiced by Ole Anderson) attempted to conceal his identity while warning NWA champion Sting, stating that he was a figure from his past. The implication was that the Scorpion was Sting's ex-partner, the Ultimate Warrior. However, it was Perez who debuted against Sting as the Black Scorpion at Clash of the Champions XII, in a losing effort.
Despite being the first major feud of his career, Perez, at least according to Ric Flair, was upset with losing and quit WCW in protest.
Sting would go on to face the Scorpion at house shows, portrayed by either Dave Sheldon or Jeff Ellis, in anticipation of prolonging the storyline with Ole Anderson assuming the role of the Scorpion.
However, when Anderson was injured and forced to retire, the decision was made to blow off the angle with a return match, where the Scorpion was revealed to be none other than, the Nature Boy himself.
