10 Matches WWE Could Have Booked For WrestleMania 38
2. WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar © Vs. Cesaro Vs. Bobby Lashley
With patience, foresight and more tactful negotiation, this was one of the myriad options at WWE’s disposal for the WrestleMania co-main event.
Assuming the plan was always for ‘The Beast’ to enter WrestleMania as WWE Champion, the entire Road to WrestleMania could have been salvaged. On a timeline where Lesnar retains against Bobby Lashley under increasingly dubious circumstances, the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber are both cleared to establish fresh challengers. With Big E defecting to SmackDown, a Rumble win and subsequent pursuit of Roman Reigns for the recently dethroned WWE Champion would have been a shrewd strategy. Meanwhile, a renewed contract and push for Cesaro could’ve conceivably yielded a compensatory brand switch to RAW, victory in the Chamber and a sleeper classic with Lesnar at WrestleMania. A gutsy performance from a wounded but relentless Lashley would make an already monumental clash can’t-miss.
In a perfect world, perhaps.
Unfortunately, WrestleMania hosts Brock Lesnar defending the WWE Championship against Universal Champion Roman Reigns in a main event that didn’t need both titles. Contract talks broke down with the Swiss Superman and 11 years as WWE’s utility player ended five days after Elimination Chamber. Despite moving mountains in order to get medically cleared in time, Lashley is evidently being rewarded with a relatively pointless tilt against Omos instead of the merited rematch with Lesnar. It’s miles from ideal for 'The All Mighty', but at least a match is on the cards.
Which is more than can be said for another former WWE Champion…
