Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker had multiple classics in their respective lockers, but miraculously saved their best efforts for epic clashes against each other.

October 1997's Hell In A Cell was and remains the company's best ever steel cage match in-part because of the return to the original psychology of the gimmick. 'HBK' was sh*t-scared of 'The Deadman', and not just because everybody was. The storyline had called for Michaels to turn his d*ckhead up to 11 in his assaults on the conscience of the company, the roofed mesh would facilitate his overdue comeuppance. And how.

Battered in a way few could emote, Shawn was beaten beyond reproach until he salvaged brief control and snatched at an escape. As a ringside cameraman required stretchering out of the structure, Michaels seized the opportunity but was quickly made to regret his decision when the relentless 'Phenom' gave chase.

Undertaker battered Shawn more for having the gaul to try and escape the inescapable reality of his grim situation, bloodying him up on one side of the structure for kicking him off the other. Kane's iconic debut was both a perfect payoff to the summer's long-form sibling mystery and the match itself. Undertaker was prepared to let Shawn die, as he'd done decades earlier with his younger brother - Paul Bearer's big red surprise was the real killer blow.
