10 Memorable WWE Slammy Awards Moments

The Slammys returned last night on Raw...

The WWE Slammy Awards returned last night on Raw. For those of you who have never seen this prestigious ceremony before, The Slammys are the WWE's equivalent to the Grammy Awards where specialist awards are presented to superstars and managers alike. Roman Reigns was crowned 'Superstar of the Year' while Dean Ambrose won 'Breakout Star of the Year.' A full run down of the winners and losers can be found here. This year was the 12th edition of the ceremony, which started in 1986. The first couple Slammys were held as separate events in front of a live audience and were even aired on MTV. Back then, the awards were intertwined with musical performances, and sometimes lip-syncs, from WWE wrestlers and even Vince McMahon himself. There have been three hiatuses in the awards' history, from 1988-94, 1995 and 1998-2008. The 1994 awards returned on a special edition of WWF Mania before another break till 1996 where the Slammys took on a banquet-like format. The concept endured another long hiatus until its return in 2008 where its current format of regular matches on a live TV arena show was first used. The recipient of the award receives a statuette that depicts one wrestler holding another over his head. Honestly, the awards don't mean a great deal but one man took their importance to a whole new level. In 1997, the late Owen Hart accepted a second Slammy Award even though he wasn't nominated for one of them. The self proclaimed two-time Slammy winner would take his trophies everywhere with him, even to the ring.
