10 Mistakes WWE Has Made With WrestleMania 33
2. AJ Styles Vs Shane McMahon
Sure, there’s a story here. A good one, even.
AJ Styles has been made to jump through hoops in order to earn his shot at the WWE title. Randy Orton gave his chance away, as part of his ploy to deeper embed himself in the Wyatt Family in order to destroy it from within. So when Randy decided to reinstate his title match clause, AJ was hung out to dry, and his resulting anger led to a vicious assault on SmackDown LIVE commissioner Shane McMahon.
But if the story here is solid, the promised match doesn’t really live up to it. As Corey Graves put it on the most recent episode of Bring It To The Table: “AJ Styles vs Shane McMahon does nothing for me.”
If we’re supposed to believe that AJ can only really be topped by the likes of John Cena and Randy Orton, peak WWE Superstars in the prime of their careers, then what credible threat does a 47 year old man with minimal recent in-ring experience pose?
Fans are aching to see The Miz and Daniel Bryan settle their slow-building backstage feud, and this almost feels like a consolation prize, albeit not a particularly rewarding one. No doubt Shane and AJ will put on a high risk, high-flying contest, but if there’s one thing that still feels low, it’s the stakes at play.
