10 MMA Moments Seconds Before Disaster

3. Fedor Knocks Fabricio Werdum Down

David Gardner Hello Japan

It's difficult for newer fans of the sport of MMA to comprehend just how great a fighter Fedor Emelianenko was during his prime. Fedor's greatness also posed another problem rather alien to more modern fans and that was that fact that the consensus best fighter in his division did not compete in the UFC.

In fact, Fedor didn't even compete in the US, until he was more than 25 fights into his professional career.

But when the Russian did make his way over to America, fans flocked to see some of the hypothetical matchups that had been speculated about for years.

So when the PRIDE Heavyweight Grand Prix winner took on Fabricio Werdum, who had washed out of the UFC, most assumed that the fight was nothing more than a formality. And to begin with, it seemed like it would be as Fedor dropped the Brazilian in their first real exchange.

However, Fedor was overzealous in his rush to finish the fight, and was ultimately submitted by the BJJ specialist, marking an end to his nearly decade long unbeaten streak.
