Just like the man he stared down on that calamitous night in 2004, Goldberg had lots of unfinished business in WWE. His year in the company had always been seen as a huge missed opportunity, with his momentum being obliterated by a single shot from Triple H's sledgehammer. Goldberg fell out of love with the industry, and had not been seen in a WWE ring in twelve years by the time he returned in 2016.

However, coinciding with his appearance as a pre-order bonus in WWE 2K17, Goldberg finally returned to WWE on the October 17th edition of Raw in 2016. Announced ahead of time, the entire night built towards Goldberg appearing at the end of the show. There was some skepticism about how Goldberg would be treated, especially given his acrimonious exit from the company and fears he wouldn't fit into WWE's work-rate era.

Goldberg however arrived to one of the greatest ovations the company has ever heard for a returning legend, with Michael Cole's introduction being greeted with rapturous cheers before the Pepsi Centre in Denver, Colorado began thunderously chanting Goldberg's name. Everyone was suddenly transported back to 1998 as this Clint Eastwood like figure returned to declare himself for battle one last time.
