The Usos and The New Day had the feud of 2017, making up for a notoriously weak era of SmackDown through their excellent matches and segments. Their contest at Battleground 2017 cemented Xavier Woods as one of the best babyface sellers in the world, and they delivered a tag team classic on the SummerSlam pre-show. However, their most acclaimed match together was in the steel structure itself, where they stole the show.

The two teams destroyed each other, implementing genuinely excellent tag team psychology and putting their opponents through hell. It was compelling to watch each team strategise and work together in the lawless cage, especially since it led to even more captivating action between the pair.

In terms of rejecting the PG era, it showed audiences one of the most brutal spots of the decade, the mauling of Xavier Woods. Handcuffing him to the ringpost, the Usos battered Woods with kendo sticks as he screamed and convulsed upon every strike. The sounds and expressions were horrifying and it sold just how far The Usos were willing to go.

It was a match that could have easily happened in another era, and we’re grateful we got it in this one.
