10 Moments That Cemented Your Love For Professional Wrestling
3. Kofi Kingston Wins WWE Championship (WWE WrestleMania 35, 7 April 2019)
WrestleMania 35 was a changing of the guard.
Seth Rollins overcame Brock Lesnar to become Universal Champion while on the run of his career. Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Ronda Rousey became the first women's bout to headline a 'Mania card.
Both moments were exemplary definitions of a WrestleMania moment, however, none quite reached the heights of Kofi Kingston's history-making WWE Title capture vs. Daniel Bryan.
It was almost a repeat of Bryan's own triumph over Randy Orton and Batista five years earlier; the smaller, cruiserweight-style grappler that, traditionally, wouldn't be chosen as the face of WWE. Unlike the now-Bryan Danielson, though, Kofi had risen through WWE for eleven years prior to this match. He'd earned it.
Kofi's journey from February 2019 onwards was as organic a tale as WWE could ever tell. He was only ever included in the WWE Title Elimination Chamber match because Mustafa Ali became sidelined. Had it not been for his impeccable performance during a gauntlet match that month, he'd never have been in this position. He continued his pursuit, ultimately dethroning Bryan in a year-stealing moment.
The reaction and support directed towards Kofi after this was real. It wasn't your typical X wrestler congratulates Y wrestler on title win; it was people celebrating history being made. Xavier Woods' tears were felt that evening.
